It’s a new day!

I recently made a major change in my life. I changed jobs. I had been with my former employer for 12 years. I loved the company, I loved the people, but the logistics (commute / hours) and the actual work were dragging me down. I am not someone who makes this kind of change often. I have had only 3 jobs in the last 20 years.

I have been in my new job two weeks and I believe the move was a really good one. My commute has been cut essentially in half, giving me a ton more time in my day to spend with family and on projects. The work is challenging and the opportunities to learn are myriad.

I gave myself this first two weeks to get my feet under me logistics-wise. I have been going to bed late, sleeping in until the last moment, and spending lots of time goofing off and enjoying this new wealth of time. It’s been fun.

I am a big believer in fresh starts. Every day is a new chance to start fresh. Every week is a chance to do better than the last. This viewpoint helps me cope with the sometimes overwhelming feeling that I am failing and not moving any closer to my goals. Declaring a fresh start is great, but doing at least one thing to cement that start is even better.

If you decide to make a fresh start in life or maybe just start a new practice or habit, do at least one thing immediately after making this decision that helps cement it and builds momentum. Tomorrow at 6a you may not feel like getting out of bed to go for a run, but if you are trying to run every weekday and you already have one in the bag (cement!), you are 1/5 of the way to your goal. You have some momentum or at least the beginning of a streak that you don’t want to break.

For me, it is time to get back to work. I am very excited about this as now I have a much bigger palette of time to work with. Right now I am at one of my favorite places to work (Coffeeshop) and I am adapting my daily and weekly practices to this new schedule. I am hoping the new increase in time will exponentially increase my results. Only time will tell, but for now, it’s a new day and I am going to get as much momentum out of it as I possibly can.
